Back On Track !

A total of 12 touchdowns, 710 yards passing, and 91 points was the main story of yesterday's Jets game that was basically a Must Win. And, the Jets weren't even wearing their green uniforms; they were in those hideous blue and yellow ones from the days of the Titans.

It was definitely a crazy game that didn't start out well. Favre threw a terrible interception. We missed a field goal. But, Jenkins blocked their FG attempt. Things started to change and we had one hell of a 2nd quarter scoring 34 points in a single quarter, a team record. Amazing.

There were so many crazy moments that I don't even know where to begin. We had 5 takeaways in the first half. Coles had 3 touchdown receptions. We scored on eight of 12 possessions. Revis even picked one off for a TD to join in on the fun. Favre threw for a career high 6 touchdowns tying a 36 year old recod by Joe Namath.

Then there was half time. I sat there with not a sign of stress leading the game 34-0. And who would have thought that the defense would go to sleep in the 3rd quarter giving them 21 points right back to cut the deficit to just 13 points. Crap...we have a game now. What the hell happened to the defense? The pass rush stopped. The coverage stopped. It got ugly? Were the Jets gonna blow a 34-0 lead? It sure looked like it.

The 4th quarter was more balanced but still too many points given up. We did exchange points back and fourth but the moment of truth was a 4th and 1 from the Cardinals 40. The smart move was to punt as we were only up 13 points. We were going to go for it and we NEVER get that one yard we need. Favre gets the snap, it's play action and the entire defense was fooled as he heaved the ball 46 yards to Cotchery for a TD. It was a balsy call that luckily didn't backfire like the stupid on sides kick last Monday night.

Then at the end of the game to ice it after they scored again, Favre found a wide open Keller in the endzone. The decided to go for 2 points to make it a 3 TD game. It was a crazy shootout that was fun and quite stressful but a win is a win and we needed it badly.

It was the 2nd most points we've ever scored in a game.

Hopefully with the Bye week here, we can now see what is wrong with this defense.

But until then, I'm gonna enjoy this one for a bit.

We Stink

I’m not even sure to begin after watching last night’s fiasco. My finger is all wrapped up from tearing6 a finger tendon that it is good that I can’t type much.

First of all, Mangenius is Manlost. After 3 years, when will he realize that the 3-4 defense isn’t working. We can’t stop the run. We get minimal pass rush. And we can’t cover the receivers. Maybe it is time to change the scheme already. We gave up over 30 points in the first half alone.

I have issues with Mangini calling an onsides kick when you were within 2 scores in the first half. I think we do this twice a year under Mangini and it never works and bad thins always come from it. So Eric…stop F**KING doing it. It’s killing us.

And why can this team EVER convert 2 point conversions. Every team does it against us when then need it and succeed but we NEVER convert. Why is that?

Yeah, Favre had two bad interceptions with one for a TD but they gave us one to David Barrett so that really wasn’t the issue. The offense is definitely a bit rusty. They need a deep threat / speedy receiver on this team to better stretch the field. I’m liking Dustin Keller. Wish they’d throw him the ball more. And Cotchery is turning into a hell of oa wide receiver. But the offense just stalls out all the time.

And I was shocked when I saw Ben Graham back on the team. Wasn’t he just cut? When did they re-sign this guy?

Yesterday we were awful from beginning to end. We are one play away from being 0-3. If they go 1-3 heading into the bye week, can you say, “season over.” Yup…it’s MUST WIN already!

Jets Not Even Close To Pats Yet

Yesterday's loss was unacceptable. It was our home opener. It was our Favre debut. It was the return of Fireman Ed. It was the unveiling of our revamped team that spent $150M in the off season. It was against our bitter Spygate / Belechicken division rivals. It was with out league MVP Tom Brady. And the result was still the same.

We had a great opening drive to start the game and our newly signed kicker misses a 31 yard field goal. That's unacceptable and changed the whole game.

After holding the Pats to two field goals with some good defense when it counted, we have another great drive and get to the 3 yard line. It's first and goal from the 3 and we run 3 straight times and don't even come close. Don't we have Brett Favre back there? Why are we not passing as we surely aren't fooling anyone on the Patriots defensive line. So, instead of 7 points, we get a measly 3.

A big problem I have with the game is our play calling. There were at least 4 times when Favre threw the ball behind the line of scrimmage for negative yardage. To move the first down markers, you need to throw the ball down the field. We don't have Chad Pennington anymore; Brett Favre is our quarterback and he has a lot stronger of an arm that Chadwick had. Let's use the future Hall of Famer to throw the ball to our receivers already and stretch the field which may help with the running game. We have this great offensive line and Thomas Jones struggles to rush for 70 yards for the game.

Favre's interception killed us but it was eventually going to happen when you start to fall behind as we had chances early to take the lead.

The penalties were WAY too many and when you start on the 20 yard line for every drive, that puts you in a huge hole. Plus, what the hell is up with our punting situation? Did Graham forget how to boot the ball? His second punt went a massive 29 yards. We were killed all day long in the battle of starting field position.

And our run defense was terrible. After Maroney went out of the game for a bit, Lamont Jordan killed us averaging over 6 yards a carry and it seemed as if it were more as they were getting huge yardage running on first down. What killed me was that when we had a nice drive to get the score within reach, we let them drive right back down the field, mostly on the ground, eating up around 6 minutes of game time.

Our pass rush was better but it was only around for a few drives. We rattle this Cassell guy who hasn't started a game since high school and we still let him beat us. Why did the pressure stop? This guy should have been hammered and we let them beat us on the ground and in the air.

Yeah, we only lost by 9 points but that is 9 points too many. We had a golden opportunity to make a statement in the AFC east. We did made a big statement and it is that we are NOT good enough yet.

My Thoughts On Game #1

When the NFL Schedule first came in out in April, it was nice to see the Dolphins as the opening game - two of the worst teams in football last year battling it out for a victory in the opening week. It was going to be touted as either Kellen Clemens or Chad Pennington vs whatever clown Miami was going to have behind center. At lot changed since then.

Chad Pennington was wearing teal with the Dolphins and Brett Favre, still in green, was quarterbacking the Jets. Yup, definitely a strange match up for sure.

Brett and the Jets came out a bit nervous but then he settled down on the second drive faking out the entire defense and then tossing a 56 yard touchdown to Jerricho Cotchery. I haven't seen the Jets have a nice long pass like that in a long time.

I like the way the new offensive line played as Thomas Jones was able to crack the 100 yard mark (101 yards) and scored a touchdown, something he did only once all of last year. Plus, Favre had protection. He was hit a few times but as the unit gets used to how Favre plays, the play of the line will only improve.

I didn't like the whole kicking situation. Not sure what happened on Nugent's field goal miss or how he bruised his thigh but that changed the entire game. We had a chance to first go up 14-0 or 10-0 if we make the field goal. Then, we are in position to kick another field goal but with Nugent hurt, we went for it on 4th down on a bizarre play where Favre avoids getting sacked and heaves a throw up in the sky with nothing to lose only to have Chansi Stuckey haul it in for a touchdown. But, since Nugent was hurt, I had a problem with us going for 2 points. How can we not have a backup plan for someone else to kick an extra point if the kicker gets hurt? I thought that was POOR planning by Mangini and crew.

But, I liked what I saw of Chansi Stuckey. The announcers even compared him to Wes Welker. He Chansi turns out half as good, I'd be extremely happy.

Favre was solid in his debut. He passed for 194 yards, 2 TDs, and no interceptions. He almost lost a fumble but things like that are gonna happen until the center becomes a bit more familiar with Favre's count. He should have had a 3rd TD but he threw a bit low to Coles in the endzone. With more time working with Coles over the next few weeks, they should start to get some better chemistry like Favre now has with Cotchery.

I did like the use of the tight ends with Baker, Franks, and Keller all contributing. The use of the tight end could really change how we move the ball down field and this has been such and under utilized position for the Jets in recent years so it was good to see.
And how about Dwight Lowery! This guy should be AFC Defensive Player of the Week in his first EVER NFL Game !

What was up in the 4th quarter with some of the plays. There was a Leon Washington run for a loss on 3rd and 3? Hey Eric Mangini...we have Brett Favre...let him pass for the 1st down. Yeah, I understand running down the clock but wouldn't you rather keep the ball for another set of downs than kicking it off to give the opponent another chance? There were a few head scratching calls in the fourth similar to this one like the Thomas Jones run for 3 yards on 3rd and 7 instead of trying to throw for a first down. The Dolphins call time out and the clock stops. If we threw and missed, the clock would still stop. All that did was have them use one of their time outs but I would rather have not even given them the ball back as we were only up by 6. Maybe Mangini was having penis problems but I hope Mangini gets his balls back and stops being so conservative. At some points in the fourth, I felt as if I was watching a Herm Edwards managed team.

It was nice to see some pass rush. I think we had like 4 sacks and a bunch or hurries. I'd like to see Gholston do some things as he was in there only on rushing situations so hopefully he'll improve to the player we want him to be. It was nice stopping the run as well. David Harris yesterday made you say, "Vilma who?"

But with all of these positives, there was Pennington with the ball with 1:43 left on the clock, no time outs, and only 61 yards away from getting his revenge on the Jets for dumping him. Nausea set in as he marched the fish down the field to the 18 yard line with 13 second remaining. The extra point we didn't attempt is gonna bite us in the ass and I was about to puke. Chad saw a receiver in the corner of the endzone. Revis boxes him out and gets in position and makes an incredible one handed interception. Oh crap...there's a flag. Wait...it's on them. The Jets Win ! Phewwwwwww... Nothing ever comes easy with this team.

Earlier in the game we had news that Tom Brady had left the game with an injury. Now there is news that he's out for the year. The whole face of the AFC now changes with a huge match up vs. Belicheck and his Bradyless Pats. I don't really care. Yeah, sucks that he got hurt but no one cared back in 1999 when we were Super Bowl favorites and Vinny went down for the year. So, to all you whining Patriots fans, "Booo-Hoooo, so sad. See ya next week !"

Favre In The Onion

Brett Favre Getting That Retirement Itch Again
September 4, 2008 Onion Sports

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ—Although veteran Jets quarterback Brett Favre claims he still loves the game, dwindling enthusiasm and a desire to bow out while on top has him contemplating retirement again, Favre confirmed Monday.

"I always told myself I'd know when it was time to walk away," the guaranteed first-ballot Hall of Famer told reporters at the Jets practice facility. "But after 17 or 18, you know, practices as the quarterback of this team, I'm just tired, mentally and physically."

Favre's decision to sit out last Thursday's preseason game against the Eagles sparked rumors that Favre was already reconsidering finally hanging up his cleats again. Favre said that, although he had not yet made a decision, he and his wife Deanna had been discussing his possible retirement since he returned from retirement in early August.

"I just showed up at camp, looked around at all those young faces, the unfamiliar stadium, thought about the brand new playbook, and I realized I was tired of it all," Favre said. "I love being a football player, I love being a quarterback, and I love being a New York Jet. But one thing Deanna and I have talked about is that I love retirement, too."

"At least, I love talking about it," Favre joked. "I guess I have a lot more experience with that than I do actual retirement, now that I think about it."

If Favre were to retire this week, the starter for the first game would be third-year pro Kellen Clemens, a strong-armed but untested passer who has backed up Favre for Favre's entire Jet career.

"I think he's ready," Favre said, noting that he had been doing his best to mentor Clemens over the past few days. "He's been waiting what seems like forever for his shot, and they can't expect him to just sit around while I take, like, a farewell tour around the league. You have to want it at this level, and I'd say that at this point, he wants it a lot more than I do."

In addition to mental fatigue, Favre said rising expectations were putting him under undue pressure.

"Face it, last year I went to the conference championship, so the only way for me to be successful here would be for me to win a Super Bowl," the all-time leader in passing touchdowns said. "And that's a tall order. With me out of the picture, though, these guys will have a great season if they can beat Miami twice. So I think, really, that this is best for the fans."

Coach Eric Mangini admitted that he had spoken to Favre several times concerning his possible retirement, but would not speculate on the team's future either way.

"I told him that only he knew if fatigue was a factor, that he should talk it over with his family, and that I'd respect any decision he made," Mangini said. "A player of his caliber, after everything he's done and with what the name Brett Favre has come represent, it's really no surprise he's tired."

"Hell, I'm pretty tired myself, and Brett's only been here a month," Mangini added.
