Disgusted
The last time the Jets were in Oakland, Mark Sanchez was on the sideline eating hotdogs in a 38-0 blowout.
This time, Sanchez and Co. suffered indigestion.
This could have been the ugliest game in the Rex Ryan era.
Is it me or are the Jets supposed to have this “great” defense that no one can run on? Darren McFadden had more yards in this game on the ground than I think the Jets have had rushing this entire season. Where was the tackling? The Jets were playing against an average NFL quarterback at best so you had to know, with Cromartie and Revis in the secondary, that they were going to try and run. With that being the case, I still don’t understand how we couldn’t stop the bleeding.
Cromartie was horrible with four penalities, a terrible fumble on a kickoff return, and a missed tackle on one of the long TD Runs. Of those four penalities, maybe two were questionable but it was still a horrific game. There were seven penalities overall which is bad considering we have a penalty free game to start the season. The worst call of the game had to be the Jets getting called for roughing the quarterback when he was barely touched. We actually got lucky that there were off-setting penalities on that play but it was still one of the worst calls of the year.
Everything was so piss poor in this game I don’t even know where to begin. Our pass rush is non existent. So, when it’s not a running play, the opposing quarterback has all day to throw the ball. It’s amazing how we can’t generate much of a rush. We couldn’t even get to the quarterback when we were blitzing. But, it didn’t matter since the Jets had the worst run stopping game in 3 years.
It’s amazing that we even had a 10 point lead in the first half only to quickly squander it away right before halftime.
The offense was better than the defense but I’m still not happy with the performance. Aren’t we supposed to be a ground and pound running team? We can barely get 2 yards per carry in most cases. We can’t run up the middle. We are mostly in 2nd and long and 3rd and long due to the lack of any running game. Most of this has got to be our pathetic offensive line. Fanaca has been gone for two years but it’s amazing the drop off from Damien Woody retiring. With both of these guys gone, Slausen and Hunter aren’t good enough to make the holes and protect the quarterback. There is either a penalty by either of these guys, or them miss a block putting Sanchez under pressure. And if that doesn’t happen, they don’t create any holes for the running game. This puts us into passing situations way more than I would like. You know something is wrong when Sanchez is throwing the ball 43 times for almost 370 yards. The Jets need a balanced attack to win games. Yes, Sanchez had a bad interception but he’s trying to make things happen because the offense doesn’t move otherwise. Maybe it’s Schottenheimer’s crappy play calling which I’ve had problems with over the years but I think it’s now a combination of poor play calling and lack of talent on the offensive line. And, I’m over Vladimir Ducasse. This guy is in his 2nd year and can’t even get into the game ahead of Slausen and Hunter whch makes me believe that Ducasse sucks. The loss of Mangold definitely didn’t help matters but I don’t think Dixon was the reason for the lack of protection and running game.
And the scary thing, despite how poorly we played, we still had a chance at the end. For a team that can’t run the ball, they call a QB draw on 4th and goal only to have Sanchez fall a yard short with his knee touching the ground. The announcers had it correct as well: KICK THE FIELD GOAL and try to get the ball back on an on-sides kick. Seven points does you NO good when you need 10 and instead they wind up with ZERO.
You would think that the Jets would play with some kind of urgency. They knew the Patriots had lost. They knew that the Ravens and Patriots were next. They know that they haven’t had a home playoff game due to losing to inferior teams like the Raiders and what do they do? They lay an egg in Oakland and now head into these two games where they MUST win one of the season could spiral out of control.
Maybe Sanchez should have eaten that hot dog when up by 10 points!
NOTES:
Darren McFadden, 177 yards, became only the third player to rush for 100 or more yards against the Jets in the Rex Ryan era He also notched the MOST rushing yards against the Jets since 2009.
Sanchez completed 27 of 43 passes for a career-high 369 yards
Tomlinson later caught an 18-yard TD pass for his 160th career touchdown.
McFadden got the Raiders back into it when he bolted around left end for a 70-yard run that was the longest against them since 1998.
Cromartie left with a rib injury and was undergoing X-rays. He committed four penalties to go with his fumble.
The previous high for a rushing yards in a game against Ryan's Jets was 153 by New Orleans in 2009.

Jets Eat Up Jaguars
The Jets were starting the season with their second straight home game coming off a dramatic win against the Cowboys.
There were high hopes for this game as the Jets were ticked off by some of the comments the Jaguars had made as well as wanted to seek revenge from the heartbreaking loss in 2009 as time expired.
And the Jets responded by thumping Jacksonville by a score of 32-3. It was hard to really determine if the Jets played well or were just playing a horrible team, or both. But, with New England in the same division and the Jets desperate to win the division and host a playoff game, you can really only afford 2 or 3 losses all year so I’m glad we were able to avoid that first loss.
The offense was pissed to start the game and wanted to end the 16 game drought of not scoring a first quarter offensive touchdown. This came after a rarity, the Jets taking the ball after winning the opening game coin toss, and walked down the field to score a touchdown when Sanchez hit Santoino Holmes in the endzone for an early 7-0 lead. Sanchez looked okay going 17 for 24, 2 TDs, but had two bad interceptions. I’m not putting 100% blame on Sanchez. The running game was horrible again for the second week in a row. Actually, it was just bad this week. Last week it was horrible. The offensive line is not making any holes for the running game and we were constantly in 2nd and long all game. So, when you can’t run; you have no choice but to throw the ball. We need to figure out how to get better holes for the running game to balance the offense and confuse their defense. When you are in 2nd and long and 3rd and long all game, the defense knows that you have to throw the ball. Thus, some balls, that you normally wouldn’t’ throw gets forced, thus, resulting in an interception. The pass protection was a bit better than last week but this team needs to improve vastly on its run blocking schemes. Dustin Keller had a great day hauling in six catches for 101 yards. Shonn Greene led our running back with 49 yards on the ground. One thing that bothered me was having Sanchez play in garbage time to try and get Plaxico a catch. It this worth risking losing your star quarterback to injury?
The Defense did their job most of the day holding Jones-Drew to under 100 yards and just three points all day coming on a long field goal. Did they really play well? I’m not sure based on the performance of their quarterback, Luke McCown. The Jets put pressure on their QB early and Muhammed Wilkerson notched his first sack for a safety in the 1st quarter. Luke McCown had a rough day. He throw four interceptions, two to Cromartie, one to Eric Smith, and one to Josh Mauga. McCown completed only 6 passes all day and finished the day with a quarterback rating of 1.8. The Jets secondary was blanketing their receivers and we were putting some nice pressure on the quarterback which helped cause the turnovers.
After the game, my one big concern was the loss of Nick Mangold who left the game in the first quarter with an ankle injury. Our running game is already is not making the holes so let’s hope Mangold’s injury is not severe and that he’s back on the field this week. Penalities were an issue as well. Last week the Jets had zero penalities. This week they were called for seven. I believe Wayne Hunter was the cause of two of them but he did improve a bit over week #1.
All in all, you can’t really complain. We’ve played two home games and have won both. Last year, our home record was 5-3 so this was an area to improve so coming out of the gate with two wins helps.
The team now goes on a 3 game road trip where the last few years, they’ve played better on the road than at home. The big test is after Oakland when it’s the Ravens and then Patriots. The Jets can’t worry about that now and must travel to Oakland and finish business there. Historically, things don’t go well in Oakland.
With a short training camp and no OTAs, there is some rust still on this team but the 2-0 start helps. Let’s hope the rust starts coming off and the improvement of this team continues as we embark on this extra long road trip.
As for the Raiders, Bart Scott would probably said, “Can’t Wait!”
NOTES:
1. Wilkerson's sack and safety made him the first rookie in the NFL to get his first of each on the same play since Ravens LB Jameel McClain did it Oct. 26, 2008, against Oakland. Ryan was the Ravens' defensive coordinator at the time.
2. McCown's 1.8 rating was the lowest ever by a quarterback against the Jets.
3. The Jets improved to 5-1 while wearing their navy New York Titans throwback jerseys, and are 2-0 for the second time in three years under Ryan.

Jets vs. Cowboys: Recap
It’s billed as New York’s Team (the capital of the world) vs Dallas aka “America’s Team.” It’s the defending two-time AFC Championship losers vs. Jerry’s kids. It’s the battle of the Ryan brothers: Rex vs. Rob. It’s opening day. It’s the Anniversary of 9/11. It’s Sanchez vs. Romo. It’s the first chance for the Jets to play a meaningful game since the Pittsburgh meltdown.
And in typical Jets fashion, just as they did numerous times last year, the Jets trailed by 14 in the 4th quarter and somehow, the comeback kids win again! Growing up a Jets fan, most losses were like, “How the hell did we lose that game?” Now, the last few years, the question after the game becomes, “How the hell did we just WIN that game?”
I can’t recall a home opener, or even the first game, as exciting as this. Hell, this may even rank in the Top 5 All-Time Jets Home Wins Ever right behind “The Monday Night Miracle” and “51-45.”
For the Jets to win more games this year than last, all they need to do is fall behind by 10+ points in the 4th quarter and all will be okay. That seems to be the magic formula for this team.
The biggest issue on this team is going to be the offensive line, specifically Wayne Hunter. For most of the first half, Sanchez barely had time to throw the ball; he was getting knocked all over the place. In additional, the offensive line couldn’t make any holes either for the running game. The coaching staff needs to fix this issue immediately.
The defense didn’t look great either, especially to start the game, letting the Cowboys walk right down the field to take an early 7-0 lead and not much later, it was 10-0. Luckily, the offense was able to do something before the half when Sanchez hit Keller in the endzone to make it a game going into the 2nd half. I would have liked a bit more pass rush even though the Jets did get a few sacks on Romo including two from Calvin Pace. But, this defense buckled down in the right spots when we needed a big play.
Mark Sanchez did a decent job from the end of the 2nd half onwards, completing 26 of 44 for 335 yards and two touchdowns to Dustin Keller and Plaxico Burress. Sanchez needs to hold on to the ball better fumbling the ball twice.
Plaxico finished with four catches for 72 yards. He will be a huge weapon for this team with his jumping ability as long as he can stay healthy.
Dallas a 24-10 lead early in the fourth quarter and things were looking bleak but we were able to cut the lead to 7 again.
With about 10 minutes left in the game, Jim Leonhard came up huge chasing down Jason Witten before the goal-line on a 67 yard play. Three plays later, Romo fumbled the ball and the Jets avoided a disaster.
Sanchez eventually hit Plaxico, who finished with four catches for 72 yards, for a touchdown. He will be a huge weapon for this team with his jumping ability as long as he can stay healthy. The Jets were still in this game an only trailed by seven.
Then, things go interesting. With the Cowboys facing a 4th and very long with around 5 minutes to go, Joe McKnight blocked a punt which bounced perfectly into Isiah Trufant’s hands who took it back for a touchdown. Can you say TIE GAME !
Then, with under a minute to go and the Cowboys had the ball with a chance to drive for the winning score, Romo hits Darelle Revis to returned the ball 20 yards to set up Nick Folk’s 50 yard, game winning field goal.
AMAZING!
It wasn’t pretty but it’s a win. You have to figure that if you want to get a home game in this league, you can’t lose more than 4 games all year. The Jets were so close to having that 1st of 4 losses. However, so close means nada.
Sure, the game was a little ugly but win basically no off-season, and the starters playing minimal football in the 4 preseason games, let’s hope this game helped get some of the rust out.
The Jets made the city proud on this historic day of the 10th anniversary of 9-11. Let’s hope they continue to make the city proud unlike the Giants who didn’t uphold their end of the bargain.
I have no voice. I got no sleep. And…I don’t care!
Bring on the Jags!
INTERESTING FACTS:
1. The Jets played game with no penalties. The last time the Jets were not called for any penalties was a 16-9 loss to Philadelphia in 2007.
2. This is the first time the Cowboys have ever lost a game in which they led by 14 or more points in the 4th quarter
3. There were 27 seconds left when Nick Folk made his 50-yard go-ahead field goal. It's the latest into regulation that the Jets have ever hit a 50+ yard go-ahead field goal.
4. This was the 3rd time in Jets history that they came back from 14+ down in 4th quarter to win. The other two games were November 21, 1983 against the Saints (came back from 14 down to win, 31-28), and October 23, 2000 against the Dolphins “Monday Night Miracle” (from 23 down to win, 40-37).
5. This was the Jets first win in team history in which they did not have a Rush TD or at least 50 Rush Yds in the same game.
6. The Jets 27-24 win tied for the 2nd-narrowest Week 1 win in team history, their closest since 1991, when they beat the Buccaneers, 16-13. The closest win was a 21-20 win over the Boston Patriots in 1961.
