Scrappy, Underdog Jets Most Hated Team In America

Scrappy, Underdog Jets Most Hated Team In America

The Brushback

NEW YORK--The scrappy, never-say-die New York Jets have defied the doubters this season, winning their first two postseason games and positioning themselves for a much-anticipated rematch against the Indianapolis Colts. Despite the fact that the Colts are a powerhouse and the Jets an underdog, pretty much everyone outside of New York wants the Colts to win, giving the Jets the distinction of being the first-ever Cinderella team that everybody hates.

A recent poll had a staggering 98 percent of respondents pulling for the glamorous, heavily-favored Colts over the gritty, underdog Jets.

“This is unusual because in most cases a surprise, out-of-nowhere team like the New York Jets would capture the hearts of the nation,” said Sports Illustrated’s Peter King. “But in this case, everyone outside of New York seems to be pulling for the Colts - the Colts, a perennial contender and media darling - to humiliate this scrappy band of never-say-die roughnecks. I can’t remember an underdog being this reviled since the Iraq insurgency.”

King and other pundits have cited the Jets’ brashness, arrogance, and the fact that they’re the Jets as reasons why America hates them.

“The very fact that they are the New York Jets is reason enough for almost anyone to hate them,” said King. “But they’re also cocky as hell and I think fans are cringing at the thought of these jerks stumbling ass-backwards into a Super Bowl on the strength of some missed field goals and then acting like they’re the second coming of the ’86 Bears. I’ve always said that if you’re going to be a Jet, you should at least be humble and gracious so you don’t give people even more of a reason to hate you.”

The Jets’ 2009 season seemed all but over after a loss to the Atlanta Falcons on December 20, but then a string of unlikely events occurred, beginning with the controversial win over the Colts and culminating with Sunday's win at San Diego, that suggested the stars may be aligned for the men in green this year. The Jets have helped their cause by playing old-school, smash-mouth football well enough to satisfy any football purist.

But everybody still hates them.

“The Indianapolis Colts are my favorite team,” said one poster on a popular Houston Texans message board. “Even though they are our rivals and I think Peyton Manning is a pansy and the whole team is just really deplorable, I cannot bear to see the Jets win. So I say, for the first time in my life, and hopefully the last: Go Colts. I’m even getting a Peyton Manning jersey. I feel like shit for doing this, but Jets-hating makes strange bedfellows.”

Jets linebacker Bart Scott has seen the level of antipathy directed against his team, but thinks the haters are out of bounds.

“I don't think all the hatred is justified,” said Scott. “Sure we’re brash, we’re bold, we talk a lot of trash, and yes, we’re going to win the whole thing and then and our coach is going to stand up there with a shit-eating grin acting like he knew what he was doing all along, and our fans are louts who like to get drunk and scream at girls to show their tits, but I don’t know why people hate us. I find all that incredibly lovable.”

On the other side of the coin, the Colts are enjoying an unprecedented surge in national popularity as fans in Houston, Jacksonville, San Diego, Boston, Miami, Baltimore, and Cleveland all staged massive pro-Colts rallies on Monday morning.

Said Colts quarterback Peyton Manning: “I never thought I’d see the day when people in San Diego, Boston, and Houston were cheering us on, but I guess there’s nothing that captures the hearts and minds of the nation like a coldly, efficient, heavily-favored, well-oiled machine of a football team that goes deep into the playoffs pretty much every year. It’s heartwarming, really.”

Jets Super Bowl: It's In The Math

It's all in the MATH that we win this year's Super Bowl:

This year's football season is 2009.
The last Jets Super Bowl season was 1968 but they won in 1969.
2009 less 1969 = 40 years of frustration.
We won Super Bowl 3.
40 - 3 = 37.
Since moving to the Meadowlands, I've sat in Row 31.
31 + 37 = 68 which is the season they won the Super Bowl.
I reside in seats seats 13, 14, 15, 16, & 17.
Add these up and you get 75.
If you take 75 less 5 for the five seats I have, that equals 1970 which is the year I was born and still waiting for a Championship.
Now add the 68 with the 70 and you get 138.
If you take 138 and subtract III for the Roman numerals in Super Bowl III, that's 138 - 111 = 27. 2/7 is the date of this year's Super Bowl.
Now, if you take that 138 less Peyton Manning's number of 18 since we'll take him out plus the 4 times we've been in the Championship game, that's 138-18+4 = 124.
1/24 is the date we play the Colts for the right to go to the Super Bowl.
Then, if you take the 2009 season less the last championship season of 1968, that equals 41 which was the score we beat the Colts the last time we played them in the playoffs - 41-0.
We beat the Colts in Super Bowl III by a score of 16 to 7. 16+7 = 23.
If you take 41 less Peyton Manning's #18, you get 23 which was the total score of our last Super Bowl.
We've had 2 unsuccessful Championship games with this being the 3rd.
Three equals the number of the Super Bowl we were in. Plus our 3rd Championship game = 3rd time's a charm !

Colts...Watch Out For Revis Island

I surely wouldn't want to be trapped on Revis Island !

Let's Check The Stats

Hmmmmm....

Hey Colts

Did you see what we did to the Chargers? Watch out !

Dream

Yesterday was Martin Luthor King Day and I also had a dream.
I had a dream that the Jets Cinderella ride continues.
I had a dream that Peyton Manning spent most of the day on his ass.
I had a dream that the time clock was at 0:00 and the Jets had more points.
I had a dream that we are going to the Super Bowl !
What a great dream it was.
Let's hope it becomes a reality on Sunday !

WOOOOO !

ONE MORE FOR THE SUPER BOWL !

The season started out nice when we were 3-0 and there were talks that a Rookie head coach and a Rookie quarterback were going to take this team to the Super Bowl. Then, the wheels fell off and it looked bleak heading into the final two weeks. All of a sudden after upsetting the Chargers, we are ONE game from the Super Bowl. Can you believe it? I get chills just when I say it.

In my almost 40 years on this planet, I've seen the Jets in this spot twice before. Once back in 82 for the Mud Bowl and we all know how that turned out with AJ Duhe ruining our chances. It was then a long drought until 1998's season when we had that 10-0 lead in Denver. We all know how we fumbled away that game in the 2nd half. Now, about 12 years later, we are back, one game from the Super Bowl, playing the Colts who are favorites to get back to the Super Bowl.

What is keeping me positive is that we beat the Colts. Yeah, they pulled some players but when the starters were in, it was just a 5 point game. And, writers were saying that the Chargers were the better of the two teams so maybe we got the harder team to beat out of the way. Finally, I use the Giants theory. Nobody said the Giants were going to Green Bay to win and they did. Then, nobody said two weeks later that they were going to beat the undefeated Patriots and they did to win the Super Bowl. So, anything can happen and with the the defense playing the way they are then maybe I do have to believe ! We're in the Final 4 ! One more win and we are in the Super Bowl !

Things weren't looking good in the beginning of the game after falling behind 7-0 and it could have been 10-0 if Nte Kaeding was able to kick a field goal. We couldn't move the ball on offense and couldn't even get a first down. Luckily, we were able to stick with the game plan and continue to run and eventually kicked a field goal to only be down 7-3 which was just like a victory at that point based on how poor our offense was playing.

The story of the game was defense. Darrelle Revis had a HUGE interception that went off the defender's foot and somehow never touched the ground stopping a potential Chargers' scoring drive. But the biggest interception was Jim Leonard picking off the ball deep in the Chargers end. On 3rd down and goal, Sanchez rolled out and hit Dustin Keller in the endzone to go up 10-7 and the Jets never looked back but it wasn't pretty.

After some more great defense including Kerry Rhodes' huge sack of Phillip Rivers, it was time to work the clock with the run and just try and get first downs and keep the clock moving. However, we did even better with Shonn Greene darting up the middle for a 53 yard touchdown score ! Wooooo ! We were now up by 10 in the 4th quarter and I still didn't feel safe as these are the JETS and we've lost games up 10 too many times in the 4th quarter.

What drove me bananas when we kicked off the ball to the Chargers, it was a squib kick that gave the ball to the opponent on the 48 yard line. Come on. You can't just give them the ball at mid-field. It's so rare when a kickoff is returned for a touchdown so kick it deep and let them beat you instead of giving them the ball so close. A minute later, they were knocking on the door after a long pass which we then threw the red flag to review and a moron on their team kicked the red flag for a 15 yard penality which helped. But, they scored way to fast and there was still over two minutes left and they had one time out and the 2 minute warning. So, it was time for the on-sides kick which luckily Kerry Rhodes bobbled and then recovered.

Now, it was 4th and 1. Do we punt? Hell no. We go for it to try and ice the game. Thomas Jones get the ball. Runs for a yard and a half. FIRST DOWN. Game Over ! We're off to the Championship Game. Can you believe it ! Can you believe that their All-Pro kicker missed three field goals at crucial times in the game? Can you believe we totally stopped their running game. Can you believe we stopped their 11 game winning streak? Can you believe we are playing for the rights to go to the Super Bowl? Rex believes. Sanchez believes. The team believes. So, I gotta believe ! Bring on Manning and the Colts !

NOTES:

1.) The Jets won two playoff games in a season for the first time since 1982 and the second time in team history.

2.) New York was the second 9-7 team since 1997 to beat a team in a divisional playoff game that was 12-4 or better.

3.) Nate Kaeding missed three FGA for the Chargers and was the first kicker to go 0-3 in an NFL playoff game since 1995. He only missed three in the regular season and is 3-9 at home in the postseason in his career.

4.) Opponents are 0-5 against the Jets on FGA this postseason after going 19-23 in the regular season.

5.) Mark Sanchez threw for 100 yards, the fewest by a Jets quarterback in a playoff win (minimum 20 att).

6.) Shonn Greene's 53-yard TD run was the second longest TD run in Jets postseason history.

7.) The Jets have two straight playoff wins on the road.
