Herm Edwards, the man who "plays to win the game" was back in the building and yesterday reinforced why I'm glad that he and Dick Curl and NOT part of this organization anymore. If they weren't so conservative and knew how to manage a game clock, they would have basically ended the Jets season yesterday. Instead, the Jets are still alive, but barely, heading into Buffalo next week to set up a huge game.
Farve had some good moments and some awful ones. Two of the interceptions were on strange plays where instead of trying to get a first down, he chucked the ball deep into double coverage for interceptions. But, the worst one was at the 9 yard line where even 3 points would have made it a two score game and throws a horrific interception that went back for 7 points the other way. Oh shit...Jets are behind to one of the worst teams in the league.
I'm not sure what is going on with the coaching. On 3rd and 1 in a tight game, don't' you think you should get the first down instead of throwing the ball deep? This is the 3rd year of this offense and I just scratch my head on at least 2 play calls EVERY drive. Many plays make no sense and the offense is so horizontal. When they do change it up and go more vertical, things happen. I'd like to see a crossing pattern across the middle once and a while. That would be nice. It's not like we don't have people to catch the ball.
What pissed me off the most is that we had around just 5 running plays the first half. I found out the reason for this. Since Chris Baker got hurt in warm-ups, they started Dustin Keller. To back him up, they used an OL named Robert Turner as the #2 tight end. Since he is an OL, they used him as a blocker to protect Favre for passing. But, what makes NO sense is why can't he block for the run? He's an OL right? We have 4 other OLs on the line. It makes NO sense why the entire offense in the first half was tailored around Robert Turner who I NEVER heard of before. I heard this on WFAN this morning and the more I heard about it, the more pissed off I got. What's more annoying is that the Chiefs were the WORST in the league in stopping the run (giving up 205 yards per game) and all we did was throw the ball. Hey Mangini...were you smoking weed while coming up with this week's game plan?
Anyway, I also heard Coles going to the coaches after the first half and telling them to throw him the ball. Now, this is one of our Top receivers. Why does he have to tell the coaches to pass the ball to him. When he gets the ball, things happen so why not make him more part of the offense? Sometimes I really get frustrated by our coaching staff and I really don't think they have a clue. Turns out, Coles caught the winning TD with a minute left in the game. But, what is more annoying, is that with one minute to go, we let Tyler Thigpen (who?) drive down the field to about the 20 before their drive stalled. Where was the defense? How could you let a 3rd string QB pick apart your defense in his first game ever?
The player of the game was Leon Washington. He scored the first TD on a one handed grab that went for 18 yards and then stored another one on a 60 yard run. But, his play on special teams getting us great field position was the key. The funny thing is that we drafted Washington as a compensation pick for Herman Edwards.
Well, maybe things will be better playing a good team next week. We surely didn't look good facing a bad team. Or, maybe we are a bad team ourselves with an easy schedule. We'll understand this team much better after next Sunday.
